SEVEN STEPS TO CHANGE

Beloved Ones:

As I am sure you know, no change is easy; nor will it come without effort. Personal change cannot be accomplished by technology. It requires commitment, persistence, determination and PATIENCE! The steps offered in this process can be accomplished with a bit of time, effort and energy in the privacy of your own home. Because change is, “an inside job,” the process of completing each of these steps will not only produce changes in your world, they will produce changes at the deepest levels of your being. They support a healing process at the level of your consciousness which is where all change begins.

Please know that the mere thought of change can create conscious and unconscious resistance. You may find that you lose interest after a few days or, you may find yourself in doubt that what you are doing is yielding the results you desire. This is all quite normal. Now that you know what can occur, I encourage you to complete each of the steps no matter what! To begin this process, you will need a notebook or pad of paper and a pen. Each step requires a certain amount of time each day. I encourage you to work in the same place, at the same time each day. And . . . if you miss a day or even several days, do not be discouraged or give up; re-commit and start again. Yes, from the beginning. The place you stop or get stuck is an indication of the resistance that may be present so, do not allow the resistance to win.

You cannot force, coerce and demand change. Change is a process that unfolds when the individual mind comes into alignment and cooperation with the flow of life and the universe at large. Change is a journey. Change is not linear; meaning if you do this, that will happen. You can never be sure what will change or how it will change. Change is uncertain. Uncertainty gives rise to fear. Change requires vision and strategic planning. Change requires that we work from the top down (from the mind to the heart) and from the bottom up (from the experience to the cause of the experience) at the same time. Change often creates problems in our environment. Fear not! Problems are our friends! Without problems we cannot learn. Without problems we have no idea of the depth of the change that is required of us. So, as you endeavor to create changes in your life, I offer you, with love, the power, beauty and energy of these seven steps to support you on your journey. For each of you, I have no idea of what will happen. What I do know is this; if you complete each step with an open heart and mind, something great will unfold in every aspect of your life. I can hardly wait for your progress reports! In the meantime,

Be Blessed!

7 STEPS TO PERSONAL CHANGE

© Inner Visions Institute for Spiritual Development

STEP 1Look at Where You Are

This step requires you to take a long, hard look at every aspect of your life – – mentally, emotionally, physically, spiritually, financially, and all of your relationships. This is an invitation for you to review every detail and, to be ruthlessly honest about what you think and feel about your every experience. This step requires that you not only look; you must write about it! When you write, you release and transform the energy of your thoughts. This not only makes the change/transformation process easier. Writing also supports you in becoming clear about and focused on the change you desire.

For each area of your life and each experience you are currently facing, you are required to identify and acknowledge your secret thoughts and feelings. Do not judge yourself or come up with a conclusion, simply write down what you see, what you think and what you feel about what is going on in your life – – this includes the good stuff and the not so good stuff.

To complete this step, you should plan to work a minimum of thirty (20-30) minutes a day for nine (9) consecutive days. You are encouraged to go through each exercise mindfully and, repeat each one until you feel clear and complete. If you need more time, keep working before moving on to the next step. And remember . . . be gentle with yourself in the process. If you miss a day or even several days, do not be discouraged or give up; re-commit and start again. Yes, from the beginning.

To begin Step 1, make a list of the things you are ready to change and the reasons for the change you desire.

What I am ready to change in personal life is:

I want this change because:

I believe this change has not happened because:

What I am now ready and willing to do to create this change is:

STEP 1 – Part 1- Spiritual Life

For this leg of the journey, you are invited to assess your current spiritual experience, if it is on your list of things to change. Do you have a daily spiritual practice? Do you consistently engage in a spiritual practice? Do you have an intimate and supportive relationship with Source, God, Christ, Spirit (by whatever name you choose); Do you understand and recognize how the Divine is moving in your life? All of these things determine the current nature and state of your spiritual life and experience. For the next 2-3 days, give yourself time and permission to become aware and acknowledge the truth about where you are spiritually. The inquiries presented are designed to support you in getting clear, making changes and moving forward.

“God’s Will for me is perfect happiness. I share God’s Will for happiness for me.”

A Course in Miracles

Workbook: Section 116

Father, for me, Your Will is perfect happiness.

My perfect happiness depends on my part in Your plan for salvation.

My part, uniting my will with Your Will, is essential for Your plan.

Morning and evening, hourly and on the half hour, and often through the day,

I align my will with Your Will, remembering Who walks with me,

entering into the awareness of your Presence.

My happiness depends on my choosing my essential part in Your plan.

For my happiness I declare the truth as often as I can,

and the Word sets me free of all erroneous ideas.

Recognition of my oneness with Your Will, Your Word, Your truth,

is my perfect happiness, for You created me perfect and forever so.

Aligning my will to recognize oneness is my happiness, my part in Your plan.

I share God’s Will for happiness for me.

God’s Will for me is perfect happiness.

STEP 1 PART 2Emotional Life

For this leg of the journey, you are invited to assess your emotional state. The following is a list of a variety of emotional experiences. As you read through the list, make note of the persistent or consistent emotions that you experience. Do not be concerned with passing or fleeting feelings. Focus on the long standing, unresolved emotions that you realize or have come to realize as present in your consciousness. Place a check mark on the line of all that apply to you. When you have completed the entire list, identify those that you believe are most often present and pressing. Once you have reviewed the list, complete the following statements:

~ The most difficult emotion for me to acknowledge/address/express is:

~ What I was taught to believe about my feelings is:

STEP 2Identify The Patterns That Are Present

In order to create anything, from an item of clothing to a shoe; from a town house to a dog house, you must have a pattern, a blue print. A pattern is a framework from which an object is cut or created. No matter what is going on in your life, affairs and world, there is a pattern that created it and, there is a pattern holding it in place. Change requires that we recognize how we do what we do so that we can create a new pattern. This step, therefore, requires a ruthless and vigilant self-examination that is on-going. You should begin this step after completing the nine (9) days of Step 1. Remember, this is an on-going process. It is recommended that you repeat the exercises of this step everyday, for nine (9) consecutive days. Step Five will instruct you about how to address what you discover.

For this step, you will draw on the information that you have identified in Step 1. As you think about and examine the things you want to change, become aware of and identify the patterns of thought, emotion, behavior, relationships, spending, speaking and reaction that are present in your life. This is not meant to be an opportunity for you to beat yourself up. It is a process of becoming aware. What do you do when you are afraid? This is a pattern. What do you do when you feel criticized? This too is a pattern. How do you react when in the company of certain people? I guarantee you will see a pattern. When do you feel your strongest? When do you feel confused or hopeless? What makes you mean? What makes you happy?

You will need 15-20 minutes at the end of the day to complete this part of the process. Get your favorite cup of tea, (or something else non-alcoholic) and mindfully review the events of the day remembering those things that went well, made you feel good and, those things that were upsetting. Using the List of Emotions and the emotions you have identified that you feel most often, respond to the inquiries below by filling in the emotions you experience throughout the day. If you can identify a new one, feel free to indicate what it was on the line provided. Your work at this step is to simply identify and document your patterns of thought, emotion and behavior. Once you identify the pattern, write it down.

EXAMINING THE PATTERNS

Today I felt ______________________________ when: ________________

What I did was: ______________________________

Doing this made me feel: ______________________________

I now know I can choose to feel: _______________ instead of: _______________

You may find it helpful to complete the Pattern Examination process at the end of your day, in order to become and stay aware of what you do, when you do it and why you do it. In this way, you can prepare yourself to make better, more self-supportive choices.

Congratulations!

Beloved, you have completed Step 2. You are on your way to laying a solid foundation for change. You should be able to identify some thoughts, feelings and behaviors that have been consistent in your life. Here is a prayer to support you through the remainder of the change process process:

Truth will correct all errors in my mind.”

A Course in Miracles

Lesson 107

Precious and Loving Spirit of Life

Today I am choosing to live the truth of who I really am.

I ask for and open myself to receive the truth.

Today I ask for the truth of my divine identity to correct all errors in my mind.

I ask for and open myself to know the truth.

I have no need to seek the truth in the world, the images representing my past false ideas. I seek the truth where it is, in my mind. Thought leaves not its source, my mind where You stored it for my perfect happiness.

I ask for and open myself to live the truth.

Today I ask that truth be my focus of attention, lifting me above all false beliefs.

I ask for and open myself to become a demonstration of truth.

Through Your Loving Presence, I have the power to change my mind.

Today I ask to know what to think and, what choices to make that will anchor me in truth.

I ask for an open myself to be the truth.

STEP 3Raise Your Standards – First Mentally, Then Emotionally

A standard is the average or normal quality, quantity, level or amount required to fulfill a need, desire or expectation. In this step, you will identify and describe the minimum level of the experience you desire. For example, if you are currently working for just enough money to cover your basic expenses, then perhaps you will consider raising the minimum level to covering the basics and saving a specific amount. Or, if you are covering your basics and savings, perhaps the next level for you would be beginning to invest or increasing your savings to reach a certain amount. This same principle applies to every area of your life. Look at where you are and decide what is the minimum you can accept and then bump it up a notch.

This step requires that you spend a minimum of 20 minutes a day, for five consecutive days simply reviewing the standards of your life. This means you will need to assess what you have and what you actually desire. Once you have clarified the minimum standard acceptable to you, bump it up to the next level and write it down; review it; see how it feels. Keep massaging the old and new standard in your mind and DO NOT BACK DOWN! Remember, this applies to every area of your life so, identify and ask for what you really and truly desire to experience.

Standard

  • Level of quality or attainment
  • Quality; Level; Grade; Caliber

  • Idea or thing used to measure the norm
  • Model in comparative evaluation;
  • Usual; Typical; Common; Ordinary; Customary

Standards for Consideration:

Exactly what I desire, More than I can imagine, Overflow/Overflowing

Enough, More than enough, Enough to share

Abundance, Abundant Supply, Opulence

Excellence, Greatness, All needs met

Love/Loving, Joy/Joyful, Peace/Peaceful

Exciting, Worthwhile, Ever Increasing

Suggested Areas to Consider for Raising Standards:

Physical Health (How do you look/feel/how do you want to look/feel?

Physical Environment (Where you live/work, etc./Where do you want to live/work, etc.)

Emotional Experience

Spiritual Experience

Professional/Work Experience

Relationships

You have the power to upgrade your standards in all levels of your experience. Ask! Believe! Transform!

Congratulations!

Beloved, you have completed Step 3. You are on your way to moving and living beyond your history. Here is a prayer offered to support in preparing your heart and mind in creating the changes you desire and receiving all that you desire.

I Seek a Future Different from the Past.

A Course in Miracles

Lesson 314

Father, I am responsible for the future I see, because I choose the feelings I am experiencing in the present. I choose feeling love, knowing it in my heart as what I am. I choose the feelings I experience now, and decide this is the feeling I extend and intend as the goal, the future I would achieve.

It is Your Law of mind: “I must look in before I look out.” God is but Love, so Love is the indwelling God, the Creator feeling, creating the vision which I envision for the future; the feeling I do desire to achieve as my goal.

I invite Love to enter in as my Guest, giving Itself through me as the future I seek.  I choose the feelings I experience.

“From new perception of the world there comes a future very different from the past. Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you. For your heavenly Father knows that you have need of all these things. Look not out upon perceptual lack, but look within, by faith, with thanksgiving, appreciation, and gratitude for Love’s gift within you now.

I seek a future as past and present,

I do it unto myself.

Now I change my wanting and all the world must change accordingly.

                               A Prayer by Fjellis

STEP 4Pull Out the Stops

Each of us has something we believe stops us from experiencing the fullness of life that we desire. Yes, even me! Some believe it is time or the lack of time. Others believe it is money or the lack of it. You may believe it is fear or lack of support and encouragement or the general socio-economic climate. The reality is that the only thing that can stop us is what we think. If we really want to create and experience change, we must change the way we think, which is so much easier said than done – – Until Today!

In this step we will identify the thoughts and corresponding emotions that hold us back. Then, in Step 5, we will ZAP them! We will begin by making another list of all the things currently present in your life and experience that you desire to change. Once you have completed the list, identify what you believe stops you from being, having or doing what you have identified. Again, do not be afraid to be ruthlessly honest and DO NOT BEAT YOURSELF UP about what comes forward in your mind. You should also feel free to include any of the patterns you have identified in Step Two. This step will require that you write for a minimum of twenty (20) minutes a day, for 3 consecutive days before moving on to Step Five.

What I really want to change in my life is:

What stops me from making this change is:

What I believe about myself that has prevented me from making this change is:

What I believe about life that has prevented me from making this change is:

Rinse and Repeat as many times as required until nothing else surfaces in your mind.

Congratulations!

Beloved, you have completed Step 4. You are on your way to eliminating and moving beyond the things you once believed have and could stop you. Here is a prayer offered to support in preparing your heart and mind in creating the changes you desire and receiving all that you desire.

I will receive whatever I request.

“Let me resolve to ask for what I really want, and only this, the state I would attain.”

A Course In Miracles

Lesson 339

Father, I resolve to train my mind to think only what I love, realizing I am affected only by my thoughts, and every thought asks for its image, every thought requests its representation. I lift up my I, from the hero of the dream, to the creator of the world. I must have a little willingness to accept the truth of what I am, Dreamer, holy Son of God, creator of this world. I must have a little willingness to lift up my I to my Self, the mind that requests with thoughts the images it perceives and maintains within Itself as a world.

I am responsible for what I see, but I must be willing to understand that only my thoughts affect my sight. With my thoughts I make my world. I experience awareness from what I think in my heart I am. I can accept the truth of What I really Am, maker of worlds, Dreamer of worlds, with all power and dominion over the world I make with my thoughts.  The power of decision is my own.

“No one desires pain. But he can think that pain is pleasure.

“No one would avoid his happiness. But he can think that joy is painful, threatening and dangerous.”

I have been mistaken, knowing not what I was requesting, was a mistaken idea about what I really Am as You created me. Forgiveness releases the mistaken request and all things I received to represent it.

Everyone will receive what he requests. I have been mistaken in my request of limited thoughts, so I must forgive them to open my mind to invite Source Thoughts to enter in and form the happy dream I desire. Now I am pivoting my mind, asking of One Who Knows, having a little willingness and trust, exchanging my mistakes for Source Thoughts. Instead of resisting the gifts of God, the Thoughts He gives to me to be the Source Thoughts of all that is seen, I must trust in God, invite the Stream of Source Thoughts to flow through the me. I ascend unto the Dreamer, requesting Source Thoughts, the love that Love creates, and have faith that the Word of God frames the dream world.

“Let us resolve today to ask for what we really want, and only this, that we may spend this day in fearlessness, without confusing pain with joy, or fear with love.”

Let me resolve I have been mistaken in my thoughts, perceptions, and beliefs, forgiving all that I ever knew, was taught, or learned. I receive whatsoever I request, resolving conflict by asking only for what I really want, taking no thought of opposites. I request only Love’s Thoughts, Source Thoughts.

Prayer Adapted from Fjellis

I Ask. I Allow! God Becomes!

And So It Is!

STEP 5Forgive Yourself and Everyone Else for Everything

This step is where the rubber must meet the road. To skip this step means that you are not serious about changing your life. Think of it this way; everything and everyone in your life is a change agent. People come into our lives to help us change who we are and what we do. Situations and circumstances, no matter how pleasant or unpleasant, always arise to make us aware of what we are called to change. If we get stuck in fear, anger, resentment or plain old pissosity about the change agents we encounter, nothing will ever change. When, however, we are willing to forgive, we open the door for a change of mind and heart. Forgiveness is not easy! Forgiveness is not fun! But – – it is necessary if we want to clear the decks to create and experience change.

This all important step will require you to spend a minimum of 40 minutes of your time each day, for seven (7) consecutive days writing a forgiveness statement. The good news is that you get to choose how you do it. You may choose to write the statement 35 times each morning and another 35 times in the evening. Or, you may choose to write all 70 statements each evening. I will leave that up to you. The bottom line is that you must write and complete the following statement 70 times each day for 7 consecutive days and, if you miss a day, you must start again. The statement is:

I forgive myself totally and unconditionally for believing _______________________. Or,

I forgive myself totally and unconditionally for engaging in a pattern of ___________. Or,

I forgive myself totally and unconditionally for refusing to forgive _______________.

You can use all or any one of these prompting statements when writing this exercise. A good place to start is with the things you believe stop you as you have identified in Step Four. From there, just write one of the statements and listen deeply to what comes forward in you mind. As a word of encouragement, no matter how difficult it may feel, DO NOT SKIP THIS STEP! And, do not worry about forgiving other people. Work with yourself.

Congratulations!

Beloved, you have completed Step 5. You are on your way to eliminating and moving beyond the things you once believed have and could stop you. Here is a prayer offered to support in preparing your heart and mind in creating the changes you desire and receiving all that you desire.

The past is over. It can touch me not.

A Course In Miracles

Lesson 289

Father, I cannot tell myself the story of the past, repeating it in my mind, and expect a different result. Thoughts are images I make, and the repeating story makes repeating images, lessons I failed to learn, appearing over and over until I learn there is no creation but Love’s, no Will but God’s. As often as I would look back, I merely deny the light within me, choosing the past lessons to repeat, and insanely expecting a different result.

It is up to me to notice each time mind falls into the past and begins to live it over, to judge, to blame, to fear, thus to make thoughts that hurt me. I am responsible for training my mind to be mindful, aware of what it is thinking, and direct its path, pivoting it when necessary, encouraging it when it is on the path to truth. I am the decision maker, training my alertness to realize forgiveness is a necessity for every past thought I let come in, and a re-direction, change in focus, a change to a loving thought is a necessary. I seek to train, focus, and change my mind, not the world. There is no doing with my body, but only refocusing mind in the path I will it to walk.

Unless the past is over in my mind, I am condemned to repeat it. Unless the past is over in my mind the ego babble blocks my awareness of the Voice of Love. Unless the past is over in my mind, Your gifts and You will remain unknowable and unattainable.  You have given me forgiveness to release the past from my mind and free mind to be here and now, in Your present, this holy instant, Now. Forgiveness deeply relinquishes past ideas, ego babble, the stories mind repeats in never ending deception to block awareness of love’s presence. Releasing the past from my mind is the way I experience communion with You, the sustaining Thoughts You give me now. Unless the past is over in my mind, my awareness of holy happiness, endless joy, limitless power and peace, the truth, will remain buried beyond the reach of my Father’s light and I remain imprisoned, where I cannot receive the gifts of His Father’s truth. Unless the past is over in my mind, I am really looking nowhere; seeing but what is not there.” The unforgiving mind does this unto itself to maintain the world it chooses of separation, pain and suffering, love’s opposite, the unlikeness of Truth.

Father, let me not look upon a past that is not there. Now I accept the truth of what I Am, and pivot my attention to my natural inheritance, the awareness of love’s presence beyond the dream of love’s opposite. Here is the end of guilt. And here am I made ready for Your final step.” The past is over in the time when I make the decision to elect the truth as the focus of attention of my mind. The past is over. It can touch me not. Unless the past is over in my mind, it hides creation forgiveness sees, obstructing the peace of God, blocking awareness of love’s presence. This I choose not.

And So It Is!

Adapted Prayer by Fjellis

STEP 6Get Grateful- Forgiveness Clears The Path To Gratitde

Gratitude is the glue that will cause all of the things you desire to stick to you. Gratitude opens the heart, mind and gates of possibility to new dimensions of experience and expression. Gratitude sends a signal from your mind, into the universe that you are open to receive. The more gratitude you express, the more you will receive to be grateful about in your life experience. I know! It sounds to simple but, I challenge you to try it anyway.

You may begin this step once you have completed Step 5 and, I would encourage you to continue it for the rest of your life – no matter what step you are working through. This step requires that you spend a minimum of ten (10) minutes a day, every day, writing down the things about which you are grateful. If you find you cannot do it everyday, no less than three (3) days a week is deemed appropriate for those who desire to experience change. For this step you are asked to write or speak aloud nine (9) statements of gratitude such as:

I am grateful for _________________________________.

Each statement must be different. Each statement must be charged with emotion; so get clear about your blessings and express your gratitude to the universe. If you can muster up an attitude of gratitude, you will be richly rewarded with many delightful, powerful and unexpected changes.

Congratulations!

Beloved, you have completed Step 6. You are on your way to eliminating and moving beyond the things you once believed have and could stop you. Here is a prayer offered to support in preparing your heart and mind in creating the changes you desire and receiving all that you desire.

My heart is beating in the peace of God.

“God created me in His Love, within His Loving Arms.

I am at home in Him, in the peace of the Heart that Love created.”

A Course In Miracles

Lesson 267

Father, I am in my Creator, Your Spiritual creation, the Thought of You that left not my Source. Separation has not occurred. I am not apart from You as I imagined in vain, a dream of perceptual lack and separation. I am still as You created me, eternally where You created me, dwelling in peace, in the Love of God, within Your Loving Arms; at home in the Mind; Your mind, the thought that created me into being as Its Spiritual creation. “Surrounding me is all the life that God created in His Love. It calls to me in every heartbeat and in every breath; in every action and in every thought.”

Behold, I am surrounded by the light of God, truth, Your spiritual creation in Your Mind, the very life I share with You, and it calls to me to awaken and remember I am at home.

“I am a messenger of God, directed by His Voice, sustained by Him in love, and held forever quiet and at peace within His loving Arms.”

Whoever believes and accepts as Knowledge and truth, that he is spirit that has not left its Source, shall dwell in the peaceful feeling place of the Most High, saving from condemnation all the forms made with his thoughts.

“I am One Self, united with my Creator, at one with every aspect of creation, and limitless in power and in peace. Spirit am I, a holy Son of God, free of all limits, safe and healed and whole, free to forgive, and free to save the world.”

It is in knowing the truth, accepting the truth is true, and false is false, that I change my mind on what I want to see, and all the world must change accordingly. Father, I am grateful for this lesson that leads me home to Love enfolding me. I am thankful for Your Teacher, your Holy Spirit, directing my path, going before me making the way smooth and straight. I appreciate the truth of What I Really Am, leaning not unto my own understanding, but in all ways acknowledging You as You direct my path. I am blessed as Your child, saved by Your Grace, and resurrected by my little willingness. I rest in the feeling place of God’s peace, love, and joy. I am a messenger of God, directed by His Voice, sustained by Him in love, held forever quiet and at peace within His Loving Arms.  For this I Am so grateful!  And So It Is!

STEP 7Update Your Belief Library

In this life, we do not get what we ask for. We only get what we expect. Since every expectation is fueled by a belief, it is important to keep our beliefs updated and current. Far too many of us attempt to make changes that are fueled and fed by outdated, self-defeating beliefs. This final step is a powerful way to update and eliminate long held beliefs that may be buried in the recesses of the mind.

This step will require 15 minutes of your time for 9 consecutive days. Then you will rest for nine (9) days and begin the process again. I encourage you to repeat this step at least once a month to offset and habitual beliefs that may re-assert themselves as changes begins to unfold in your life. To begin working through this step, review your desires from Steps Three and Four. Working with the following prompting statement, complete each statement with your honest feelings.

I believe I can be__________________ because I believe I am _________________. Or,

I believe I can do _________________ because I believe I am _________________. Or,

I believe I can have _______________ because I believe I am _________________. Or,

Notice the order of the statements; Be, Do, Have. I would encourage you to complete the statements in this order, three times in each sitting. You are of course free to do more as you feel appropriate or necessary.

Congratulations!

You have completed the entire process! It may have taken you longer than the prescribed 22 days and I want you to know – – – that it is really okay. Remember, change is a process, not a race! As you moved through this process, you may have noticed that things have started to shift and they will continue to do so. Appreciate yourself for your efforts even if you think it wasn’t perfect.

Please know that you are free to go back and spend as much time as you feel necessary on any given step, however, it is not advisable that you shorten the time, even if you feel you don’t need it. As offered, this process may not guide you to cleaner teeth or fresher breath, however, it is designed to bring to your conscious awareness what you do and how you do it that either supports or hinders the changes you desire. Once you are graced with that information, the rest is up to you. One final note, I would encourage all who are serious about undertaking this process that you do so in addition to your daily Spiritual Practice. If you do not have a Daily Spiritual Practice, please visit our website at www.Innervisionsworldwide.com, click the Services button and you will find some helpful suggestions.

Change is in the air! Please know that you are divinely supported to be the change you desire.

Be Blessed!
